They landed in Africa’s seventh-largest nation, “red with coffee/white with cotton/green with maize.” A place where once teeming rainforest has given way to scrub brush, and war has left a trail of mines and malnutrition.

As an ordained Methodist minister, Rev. Garcia has preached the gospel, pastored local churches, taught biblical and theological studies, and discipled young men as the director of a children’s home. As a medical doctor, he has overseen numerous health efforts, including campaigns to eradicate malaria and typhoid fever.

How Do You Fight a Pandemic When the Local River Is Your Kitchen Sink?

Volunteers outfitted 1,000 plastic buckets with faucets and bars of soap. The makeshift wash-stations were distributed to families lacking the soap and water necessary to combat COVID-19. Community leaders, including United Methodist Church pastors and local tribal kings, were trained in COVID-19 prevention.

Facilitators went house-to-house educating villagers in good hygiene and social distancing. After filling their buckets at the local river, families set up their new wash-stations near the center of village life.
