United Methodist Missionary Rev. Leo Garcia, M.D.: A living example of courage and connection
Rev. Garcia is a pioneer. Five years ago, he left his native Cuba with his wife the Rev. Cleivy Benitez Rivalta as the first Cuban Methodist missionaries to serve the African continent.
The General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, Inc is a 501(c)(3) and donations made are 100% tax-deductible. (EIN): 30-0989628
They landed in Africa’s seventh-largest nation, “red with coffee/white with cotton/green with maize.” A place where once teeming rainforest has given way to scrub brush, and war has left a trail of mines and malnutrition.
As an ordained Methodist minister, Rev. Garcia has preached the gospel, pastored local churches, taught biblical and theological studies, and discipled young men as the director of a children’s home. As a medical doctor, he has overseen numerous health efforts, including campaigns to eradicate malaria and typhoid fever.
