Global Mission Fellow Sylvia Night Wesonga’s
service is informed by her personal experience
growing up with hunger and hopelessness

Give today

Help bring hope to marginalized people today.

Global Mission Fellow Sylvia Night Wesonga grew up in a single-parent household in an underserved community in Kenya. Often, her patients’ struggles take Sylvia back to the traumas of her own life, marked by frequent hunger, fear, and hopelessness.

But Sylvia’s mother, Wilfresher Ajambo, is a strong woman with an indomitable faith in God. She selflessly supported her three children by working back-breaking, low-paying jobs. And she taught Sylvia five important life lessons: sacrifice, patience, resilience, hard work, and the power of prayer.

The family was unable to afford Sylvia’s high school fees. But fortunately, Sylvia’s giftedness and hard work earned her a four-year scholarship. Eventually, this led to her current placement with Global Ministries’ Global Mission Fellows program—a two-year-long stint of service with a partnering organization dedicated to promoting justice in underserved communities.

Sylvia also knows the joy of finding hope again. She serves with Global Ministries because the outreach opportunities provided allow her to be a conduit of hope to others.

As a nurse and community outreach midwife at Quéssua Health Center in East Angola, Sylvia Night Wesonga sees a lot of heartache. But one recent experience was particularly wrenching.

This past December, she examined a pregnant woman who had traveled 100 km to reach the center. When Wesonga offered the patient the required antimalaria pill, the patient politely asked if she could take the pill “to go.” She had not eaten since that morning and would not eat again until she had walked the 100-km-long return trip. Taken without food, the pill could induce nausea.

MISSION FROM THE

MARGINS

FROM THE MARGINS

TO THE MARGINS

“I want to be hope and light to people during their darkest times in life,” she says. “I want to share from the comfort and love I received during my lowest times. I know what it feels like to lose all hope.”

“It reminded me of times growing up when things were so tough and we had to survive on one meal a day.”

“It gave me chills to know she had walked that far and that food for her was so scarce,” says Wesonga. “It reminded me of times growing up when things were so tough and we had to survive on one meal a day.”

With no food to give the woman, Wesonga made an exception and allowed her to take the pill home, reciting a special prayer for her safety.

When you give, you partner with Sylvia Night Wesonga and others like her to bring justice to underserved communities.
