Every night Jose sleeps in the same doorway of a shop in Plaza Chile. On Wednesdays he attends Bible study and most Sundays he attends worship.
“Jose quotes the Bible everywhere he goes,” says Global Ministries missionary Rev. Douglas E. Williams. “He regularly prays for the homeless community of which he is a part and for whom he is in ministry. He is a beautiful human being.”
Jose is one of a number of homeless congregants who attend Williams’ parishes in the cities of Mendoza and San Juan—two of Argentina’s 100 nationwide Methodist congregations.
Since arriving in Argentina in 2015, Williams has immersed himself in the Spanish language and in Argentina’s culture and history, listening to the stories of congregants and neighbors like Jose and others to help him fully appreciate how the Argentinian Methodist Church lives out its theology of mission and ministry.
Many of Williams’ parishioners are retired Argentinian citizens. Many subsist on small government pensions that have dwindled in value due to inflation. In spite of this, many continue to financially support the church’s weekly feeding program and volunteer their time to keep church ministries running.
In addition to providing pastoral leadership to Argentinians, Williams also ministers to U.S.-based neighbors through the Volunteer-In-Mission (VIM) program that hosts short-term volunteers from partnering U.S. churches.

“My role is one of building bridges with people of faith in the United States and around the world,” says Williams. “In doing so I seek to help my U.S. Christian friends recognize that Argentina and its theological and cultural expression of Christ and Methodism have many gifts to offer. I have seen many of our volunteers walk away from their VIM experience enamored with the beauty and generous spirit of the people here.”
